UWTTC Success in Regional Tournament

02-22-10

Congrats to the UWTTC Co-ed Team & Woman's team both keep the No.1 title in Upper Midwest Region and advance to Nationals!
Here the result today:
  • UWTTC 4-0 Governor's State University
  • UWTTC 4-0 UW-Milwaukee
  • UWTTC 4-0 University of Chicago
  • UWTTC 3-2 Northwestern University
  • UWTTC 3-1 Purdue University
The UW Madison Table Tennis club went into the upper Midwest regional tournament with heavy expectations as they needed to win this tournament in order to qualify for nationals. With number one seed Ye Hu was facing a nagging knee and elbow injury and number three seed Linjun Xu well out of practice, winning the tournament seemed like a tall order.

The tournament started off well against the Badger's 1st opponent, Governor's State University.  Although their team improved vastly, the Badgers overcame them quite comfortably and therefore warmed up well for the following matches to come. Final Score 4-0.

Next up was the hosting university of UW-Milwaukee.  The Badger's were able to pull a good momentum into this match-up and good fortune saw all the Badger's players compete in good form.  Final Score 4-0.

The University of Chicago was the first real test in the competition as they just came out of a tough 3-2 loss against the strong team of Northwestern.  Perhaps their physical and emotional exhaustion from the previous round gave the Badgers a slight edge in this head to head battle, but despite this Richard Huang and Justin Li had very tight matches that saw both players fighting for every point.  Final Score 4-0.

In perhaps one of the tightest match-ups of the Badger's table tennis career was against Northwestern University.  This match really revealed the extent of number one seed Ye Hu's injuries as his face grimaced with pain after every point.  His opponent was really tough and played well. Ye Hu still fought on till the very end, but came up just short of a win in the very end.  As UW Madison faced its first lost of the day, the rest of the team began to feel the pressure.  Justin Li started his match off well against his opponent but let off for just a brief moment at 10-4 in the second set.  The player he faced took full advantage of Justin's letdown and played some spectacular table tennis while Justin Li just couldn't find an answer to returning his opponent's serve.  The score was now 2-2 and the Badgers were forced to play a doubles match.  This was the most anticipated match of the tournament which really tested UW Madison's strength and guts.  However, Ye Hu and Matija Kazalicki dug down deep and strategically outplayed their two opponents for a great win. Final Score 3-2

The final opponent was a fitting one as Purdue University and UW Madison were the only two schools that went undefeated. At this stage, many schools may have cracked under the pressure of this round, but UW Madison showed its true colors and unleashed the talent and abilities that ranked it #4 in the nation.  Final Score 3-1.

At the end of the day, UW Madison went undefeated in the tournament and qualified for nationals.  We hope to have even more success in our Nationals endeavor.

TTC success in Upper Midwest Region

10-28-09

Congratulations to the UW Madison club team on winning the NCTTA Regionals this Sunday. Top players, Matija Kazalicki, Ye Hu, Linjun Xu, Richard Huang, and Justin Li were undefeated in the co-ed A team round robin. Women players Gina Lin, Naira Ovsepyan, and Debbie Li completely dominated the womens round robin. And players Max Wang and Paul Wiesler came a close second in the co-ed B team. We played against some tough schools (Governor State, UW Milwaukee, Purdue, Northwestern, and U of Chicago) yet came out on top in the end. We hope this success will carry into the second regionals tournament and eventually into nationals.
